3D Printing Materials Guide
Â
Choosing the right material is a critical step that directly affects the durability, visual appearance, and final cost of your project. At Form Fab, we help you navigate these options to ensure your design functions exactly as intended.
3d Printing Material Options
ABS: Rugged Durability
ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a go-to material for parts requiring high strength and high temperature resistance. It is exceptionally tough and rigid, featuring a sleek matte surface finish that hides print layers well. Because it can withstand significant impact and heat, ABS is the best fit for automotive components, electronic housings, and functional engineering prototypes that need to perform under stress.
ASA: Weather Resistance
Strong internal bonds with excellent UV and temperature resistance. ASA offers high rigidity and a high-quality surface finish that withstands the elements without fading or degrading. It is the best choice for outdoor items, marine components, and products exposed to direct sunlight and harsh weather conditions.
PETG: Versatile Performance
Balanced strength with moderate temperature resistance. Good flexibility compared to ABS while remaining rigid. Glossy finish. Best for mechanical guards, snap-fit components, and food-safe containers.
PLA: Precision & Detail
Polylactic Acid (PLA) is the standard for visual prototyping. It offers moderate strength and lower temperature resistance, making it user-friendly but less suitable for heavy industrial heat. PLA is exceptionally rigid with a sharp, crisp surface finish that captures intricate geometry. Best used for high-detail visual prototypes, architectural models, and display pieces where aesthetic precision is the priority.

TPU: Industrial Flexibility
High impact strength and excellent rubber-like flexibility. Very low rigidity with a semi-matte finish. Best for seals, vibration dampeners, protective phone cases, and soft-touch handles.
